Fathersbane

Wed Jan 4, 2006, 5:32 AM
For those who don't know, I did NaNoWriMo this year, working on an original story of mine known as Fathersbane. However, what with one thing and another in late november/december, I never found the time to finish it. As one of my New Years Resolutions (so far as I have them) was to finish this story, the other night I reread the 50k I had written so far, to get in the mood to write more. I plan on it being a 150-200k story in the end, which makes it about 350-500 pages long, though I'd be fine with a 250-page one if i said everything.

Now, don't get me wrong - it's a perfectly decent little story. It's just not, by any means, of publishing standards. Yet. There is so much depth it needs, so much greater background and deeper characters and more controlled plot (certain extraneous elements have got to go). And, over the next month or so, I am going to do the detail I never did before - I will flesh out the faceless minor characters, I will add colour to the world and focus to the plot. And THEN I will try again - using the original for a basis, as it certainly is a good starting point, but making it so much better. I already have a strong idea of what to do at the beginning :) Hopefully, it'll be started before I go back to Uni - it's a lot to write in a year, after all. And then editing, and re-editing... it's a daunting prospect.

Right, the point? Since this is happening, am considering posting segments of the original up, if anyone's interested in reading them. What do you think?

Hi,
I was googling the phrase you have in your signature- 'the things we do for love, those things endure'- because it was floating around in my head and i was sure it was a quote from somewhere, but couldn't remember where. I'm going crazy trying to remember the source, so since you seem to be just about the only person on the internet who's heard it i thought i'd pop in and ask! Do you know where the quote comes from? tell me i'm not going crazy.
-by the way- i love 'golden moment!' and it's always nice to see a fellow NaNo-er...
thanks,

Hi there,

I actually learnt that quote from a fanfiction I read a long long time ago (The Draco trilogy by Cassandra Clare in the Harry Potter fandom, to be precise), but as the author was notorious for stealing quotes from all different sources it may be from somewhere else originally. I've always liked it, though, stuck with me long after the fanfic did.

I'm glad you like Golden Moment. Sadly, although i did NaNo once (2005) and loved it, I haven't really done much writing since then. Doesn't help that november happens to be exam season down here, but I find I don't have enough time to write much anymore, very sad.

Nice to meet you, though. You have no deviations yet? What do you NaNo?
